There are two things that work very well in the social media world. Mobile and videos. Put these two things together and you have one of the most powerful ways to connect and communicate with your audience. Recently, I have been noticing a lot of celebrities, athletes, and news stations using Facebook Live to reach their audiences in real-time and pour into the people in their community instantly!
When it comes to mobile, there are almost as many cell phone subscriptions as there are humans on the earth. Most of these small devices have the power to create, edit and distribute high quality videos.
Ok, ok, I realize that this is relatively new and some of you might be thinking, what in the world is Facebook Live and how does it work?
What Is Facebook Live?
In December of 2015, Facebook began testing a new feature that gave people the ability to share videos live. This gave people a new way to connect and communicate with their friends and families. Users have the ability to discover videos from their Facebook friends, public figures such as Tim Tebow, celebrities, politicians, and news stations right in their news feeds. At the end of January of 2016, Facebook expanded this capability with everyone in the U.S. on their mobile app.
So How Does Facebook Live Work?
- Log into the Facebook app on your cell phone.
- Tap on the Status Icon to update your status.
- Tap on the Live Video Icon.
- Write an optional description for your live video.
- Tap Go Live.
- Begin your live video broadcast
When you are finished with your live video broadcast, tap Finished. Your live video can only be 30 minutes or less.
Why Does This Matter?
As mentioned above mobile technology and mobile marketing is huge and has even more potential than ever before. Mobile marketing is the future. No, mobile marketing is the NOW. I was looking at some stats on our Facebook page recently and realized that over 80% of all of our Facebook posts are viewed on a mobile device and mobile usage has overtaken the desktop in internet use. Just think about it. How often are you without your phone? How often is your cell phone at least an arm reach away? People take them everywhere and I mean everywhere! A recent statistic says that 75% of Americans admitted to taking them to the bathroom!
So How Should I Use Facebook Live?
Where do I record the video: Choose somewhere that isn’t distracting, like walking down a crowded street. Find somewhere that is quite and stationary like your office. This will allow your audience to focus on you and what you are saying.
What in the world should I talk about: Talk about anything that is relevant to your viewers. If you are a pastor talk about upcoming messages, or past messages. Give a quick leadership teaching or encouragement for people. If you are a worship leader, or tech. leader, give your audience a behind the scenes look at what practice looks like or what the tech. area looks like. It doesn’t matter what your position is inside the church you can effectively reach your audience by creating engaging content.
How long should I talk: Concentrate on creating engaging quality content that last for about 2-3 minutes. People tend to lose interest faster on Facebook than they would by actually hearing you speak in person. This will also help in making sure what you are talking about is quality.
I have recently seen people use Facebook Live to stream their messages live. While this can be a cheap way to do live video for your messages and the video is quality is great, it might not be the best. If using it I would recommend getting a cell phone adapter for a tripod and sitting close to the speaker.
Nervous about using Facebook Live? Don’t be! Just give it a shot and see how your audience reacts. I bet you’ll never turn back from it.
